My Writings. My Thoughts.
Political Activism
There are many ways to approach political activism, and which ever you choose will depend on what you are comfortable with, and what fulfills you most. People have different opinions about which actions are most effective, but the bottom line is that every form of activism contributes to change, and every little bit helps.
Being Informed
To get the truth, you cannot rely on a single source of media, especially if it is a mainstream source. You must diversify. Check out independent media sources online, watch documentaries and read books. While it is important to read the paper or watch CNN, realize these media outlets have a lot of corporate and governmental stakeholders, and will therefore not necessarily give the whole truth on stories if it might damage any reputations.
Holding Events
A really easy way to spread awareness is to hold small events. For example, if you found a documentary that really struck you, screen it for the community or your school. Or, if you hear of a person who is doing really great activist work, or wrote a good book, try to have them come and speak to your community or school.
Advertising
Putting up posters is a great way to get attention. Stick them up EVERYwhere. They will get taken down, but just keep putting them back up, and of course, use recycled paper. Also, you could make a Facebook group, get on the local radio, submit it to the paper for the ‘upcoming events’ section and do announcements to your class or any organizations you are involved with. The more people helping you to do this the better.
Get Support
If you do decide to hold an event, approach local/school groups that you think might be interested. Approach local venues/your teacher or principal to talk about where you could hold the event, and what equipment you might need. Often, holding an event requires a little bit of money; you could obtain this in a variety of ways…
Getting Funds
To get some money before the event (if you need to pay for the venue, renting equipment, paying speakers etc.) you could hold fundraisers. Simple things like a party at your house, a bake sale (yes bake sales are great!) or straight up asking for a donation from someone who you think would be into your cause. At the event you can ask for a set price to attend, or you could ‘pass the hat’ for donations. Offering a sliding scale (e.g. $5-20) or Pay-what-you-can system is a great way to be inclusive to different people and to encourage people to come out.
Writing
Writing letters to the editors in newspapers or magazines is a great thing to do, writing blogs, and especially, writing letters to politicians. Let them know how you feel about climate change and what you want them to do about it. Give references as well to make it easier for them to verify your claims, as it is unlikely they will take the initiative to look in to your claims further on their own.
In Your Own Life
Practice what you preach. Think about what you buy, where it came from and what corporations you support; everything is political. During elections, take the time to learn about the candidates and the issues before you vote.
